TTYL Taiwan

Just like that it’s over. I came, I saw, I conquered. Not really, this was an opportunity to see parts of Taiwan that aren’t in the brochures per se. And definitely not luxe. It’s was a wonderful opportunity to meet a new friend’s family and get reacquainted with a language I’ve been desperate to learn. I met an American pharmacist on one of the excursions and we hung out the whole day. She is super interesting and highly intelligent. Our conversations were peppered with words like “austerity” “diaphanous” and she said she would shepherd me home. Erica B. with a C. would likely ace a Jeopardy event without a glitch. I wanted to ask her if it hurts to be so smart. Instead I just floated in admiration of her and made her hike with me on a trail we had no business being on. Guess what? She hikes at home in Washington and confirmed the leaves in my hair were not poison ivy or oak “The leaves are shiny…” Super smart. We had tea and ceremonially did exactly what we were shown by the tea master. I would have never had done something like this without meeting her on the bus. And this is why I travel. Cheers to Taiwan and Hõo Tal La to Erica B. spelled with a C.

That’s Erica in the background

Taiwan two weeks too long

Grid is beautiful. Jackie in her hat

Let me explain. I have a new friend who comes to see her Dad and stays for two weeks. I stayed in Taipei for a week then joined Jackie. I realized I was going to be staying at her family’s home a 3 bedroom apartment on the 6th floor. With four people: newly married couple and the mother in law. I got a room to myself. Jackie and Lily shared theirs. Had I known I would have not inconvenienced them. “Fish and visitors both stink in 3 days” . I did my best to stay low profile and not occupy common areas except to eat meal. Initially I wanted to Karaoke and go crazy with the mike. And I did offer to stay in hotel close by but I was nudge by Jackie to chill and ride it out. Second time here and first impression overall is the generosity of the people who hosted me both times. It’s pretty amazing, the cooked meals and guide to hikes. Coffee in am made me feel at home. But it was Lily Wendy Jackie and”Sham Sham” made it Nice!

Taking one bus with 41 stops to a public bath hot springs. Greeted by “ don’t speak English “ I point pay and pray. Immediately greeted with nakedness. Imperfectly perfect bodies like mine with scars but in different places. I break the first cardinal rule. The loudmouth leader tells me to shower first and then two gals sit me down wrap my hair and place a shower cap on. Hand gestures and voices guide me into the hotter bath. 45 C and I realize this soak is for the pros. The last hot springs spa I went to here had lacquered teak decking, walnut wood from floor to ceiling, large canvas umbrellas and rich foreigners. I soak in the 40 C with a ph that stings your eyes. Ironically the loudmouth looked out for me and sent her ladies of leisure to tell me to sit out and drink spring water. I complied and closed my eyes to hear the humming of fans above the din. One of the gals had a plastic “slapper ” she used frequently “ slap slap slap against newly dilated skin tissue. I mimicked the slaps and then next thing you knowwhack” whack on my back. It felt good. I could feel eyes upon me and it’s been confirmed because I’m asked to go back in the water. I feel insignificant in the best way but also brave by walking in to a place, where my friend says “ they spit over the side and talk shit about your body”. I know they got a kick out of the foreigner just as I did by the way they treated me. These bathing beauties are benevolent. Phonetically speaking I said “ Bahng bahng ma xie xie, got dressed and left. Oh em gee. You are right Cynthia.

150 NTD

Quick Taiwanese bites

Most popular pet is The Bichon Frisée. Like the Jack Russells are to the UK. Not all night markets are the same. You could take a chance at shooting some hoops or popping balloons in addition to the array of tongue tingling tidbits. Food is the star of this whole country. Marquees feature silhouettes of chefs in chef’s hat or a giant mochi cut in half, as big as your house. Bubble tea or “Boba” was invented here so like the hands of a clock, there is one for every hour. Every glance is either a store front, billboard or a hand holding bubble tea. Coin operated karaoke . Push in the code of 8412 and get ready to sing “Paper Roses” The Pacific Ocean water is blue compare to the greenish hues in Huntington Beach. No graffiti no trash no problem. 30 NTD ( new Taiwan dollar) is 1 dollar US. Tonight staying at a 9 story hostel with a Japanese style tub. I sit in as I sip my white gourd and lemon tea boba thing which has theses little seeds encased in a tart jelly like fruit. Slightly sour then a little sweet and tiny crunch once you bite seed . Taipei has just as many layers as the drink. How did we all get so lucky.
