CAMP ANV.

Redwood forrest floor

Third season and no two are alike. I got the call several months ago to join and be the camp nurse. Splinters, abrasions and soft tears were no different from the past. A lovely chance to beat the heat and see old friends. “ single digit kidlits “ I was in for a surprise.

Budget cuts and new team players made Camp Acta Non Verba different. Gone were the field trips to the plex and muséums. I learned quickly and said to myself “ new kingdom new ruler”. Swimming at Castro Lagoon nada mas. I lamented that the food that was once prepared by chef Diema was replaced by Organic gluten free,no pork no peanut butter items. The substitute wasn’t so bad. Carrots, rice cakes, almond butter and popcorn. I closed my eyes and prétended I was at La Costa. Lunch was hit or miss and quickly non verbal behavior was de rigueur. Shoulder shrugs meantits okay not bad…”. Downward frown meant “ no good”. The fruit of pears, bananas and apples were good. Plenty of campers brought in their own goodies as time went on.

Some things never change. Jr couselors looked lost. The OG’s had a summer gig locked in and the kids love to scream giggle and play. I have two more days left and I said this last year “My teachers keep getting younger and they be bussin. Zaijian.
